Valentine's Day is nearly here. The day marks the season—the season of love, romance, and affection. You need not limit your celebration of the life and love that you share with your special someone to a day. You can extend to an entire week or a weekend if the latter is too much.
A romantic getaway in honor of the day of love is something that really special. And there are cities in the U.S. That are well-known for their intimate atmosphere.

5. Charleston, South Carolina
There is a great deal of charm in those old southern town and seaport. Many of the areas that survived from the colonial and pre-Civil War era have been well preserved. Charleston is a big city with the feel of a small town. Carriage rides through the older sections of the city, a tour through the historic South Carolina Military Academy, and a brisk afternoon walk through many of the city's parks and botanical gardens makes Charleston the perfect Valentine's treat.

4. Savannah, Georgia
There are many similarities between Savannah and the aforementioned Charleston. Both were once the commercial, industrial, and social centers of the south, and they still carry that tinge of old world romance and grandeur. Savannah is well-known for its many cobble stoned streets and pre-modern houses. Savannah, like Charleston, has some of the best beaches in the country; and although it is not quite the season for swimming enjoying a candlelit dinner on one of its beautiful waterfronts will make the weekend special.

3. Aspen, Colorado
From the beaches of the old south we move to the mountains of the West. Aspen, Colorado is well-known by ski enthusiasts everywhere. However, neither you nor your partner need be skiers to enjoy all that the city offers in romance. Indeed, the best part of vacationing in a ski resort town is enjoying the coziness and comfort of a beautifully designed cabin. To be sure, you and yours can enjoy breathtaking mountain views in Aspen. But at the end of the day you will have the luxury of sitting next to a fire, ordering a bottle of wine, and taking in the pleasure of a warm lounge.

2. Cape Cod, Massachusetts
The city is a premiere destination for summer trips. It is also great for a romantic getaway. Exploring what used to be the most active and vibrant fishing village in the country is a great way to pass a mini-vacation. Of course the best thing to enjoy about Cape Cod is the food. The romance of old New England lies not only in the many well-preserved buildings, but in a wonderful seafood meal over a glass of champagne.

1. Maui
Taking her to Hawaii is the ultimate romantic gesture. It is always summer in this unique Pacific state. A break from the cold of the continental states may be just what you both need. Spending a little time in the sun will raise your blood flow and your passion. And there are few more spectacular and romantic experiences than dinner on a Maui waterfront at sunset.

The general gloom of winter is broken by the day set aside for lovers. Valentine's Day is a time of joy and delight. It is time to celebrate your affection and your passion for the person who is most important in your life.

Although it is marked out on the calendar as a single day, there is no reason to make it an event to celebrate over a number of days. Taking your lover on a mini-break to a different city will make the occasion quite special. Here are 5 of the top cities in which the atmosphere of romance and intimacy is especially strong. Some are well known; others you may never have considered before.

5. New York City

The Big Apple is a true city for lovers. Although it is most commonly identified with business, commerce, and culture, its landscape is filled with places that make for excellent lover's retreats. A trip to the top of the Empire State Building offers a beautiful and breathtaking view of the city that never sleeps. There are carriage rides through the Central Park and trips up the Hudson. A sudden immersion into the energy and vibrancy of the city is enough to make the hearts of you and your lover race—and we all know what that means.

4. Rome

Perhaps the most impressive feature of this city is its architecture. It is still largely medieval and Early Renaissance. This makes for striking beauty. A walk down a Roman side street can result in the most intense aesthetic experience of our life. In addition to the architecture, there are museums, statues, and the café life of its many squares. Whisking your love away for a weekend in Italy's capital, and Western Civilization's cultural capital, will be a treat to you both.

3. Amsterdam

If you have never been to Holland's largest city, you should make it a point to do so. Valentine's Day provides a great opportunity to make the trip. A walk along the city's many canals and visits to many of its comfortable coffee houses and lounges will make for the most relaxing breaks you're likely to take.

2. Bruges

There is also much to see in nearby Bruges, in Belgium. If your lovely has a sweet tooth, if pastries, chocolates, and cakes are the things they enjoy most, then they will bask in the richness of the bakeries in Bruges. There are also the sites—brilliantly preserved gothic and medieval buildings and long tours along the many canals of the city. There is also Michelangelo's famous Madonna and Child to see.

1. Paris

Number one on this list must of course be Paris. It is the city of lights and of live—for good reason. Nothing beats the experience of being kissed on a rainy Parisian afternoon. It is perhaps the most romantic thing that can happen to anyone. The cafes, the beautiful boulevards, the Eiffel Tower, and other landmarks of significance make Paris one of the greatest cities for lovers that have ever been.
